ABOUT THE POSITION
Summary of the Structured Literacy Coach Per Diem Position
The Center for Student Achievement Solutions content expert coaches is considered a critical lever in partnering with districts and schools to improve classroom instruction, accelerate learning, and close achievement gaps. There are two primary functions for the role; build teacher capacity and long-term sustainable research-proven instructional practices.
First and foremost, instructional coaches are excellent teachers. They are responsible for helping teachers develop content expertise, deeper knowledge in key areas, such as research-proven best practices and evidence-based instructional strategies to improve teaching and learning for at-risk learners, students with disabilities (IEP) and English Language Learners (ELL), standards-based lesson plans, and how to use assessments to identify barriers and close the achievement gaps.
The ideal candidate will utilize adult learning theory to support and motivate adult learners to improve professional practice. Instructional coaches are responsible for ensuring that teachers are equipped to deliver high-quality instruction to address the needs of all students by providing impactful job-embedded coaching support webinars, workshops, and institutes to improve teaching practices and accelerate learning.
Position Type
This is a per-diem position. We will assign content specialists to provide professional development training sessions or coaching support to classroom teachers. The content specialists will be scheduled based on requests from the states, districts, and schools that we serve.
Our services are customized based on the needs of each client, and sometimes this requires services to be rendered before or after-school evenings or a weekend day. We cannot guarantee a certain number of workdays per month. The work is allocated based on the professional development engagement demands of each state, district, or school. Compensation structure is based on the completion of work for assigned professional development session(s) rendered each day.
Classroom instructional coaching support is based on an 8-hour workday which means 6 hours is dedicated to direct coaching support services and 2 hours to complete required coaching support documentation.
Job-Embedded Professional Development and Instructional Coaching Support
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Develop positive and supportive relationships with classroom teachers, specialized professionals, and paraprofessionals.
- Facilitate on-site, blended, and virtual professional development presentations that are interactive and impactful within the coaching cycle.
- Provide strengths-based one-to-one job-embedded coaching support and facilitate grade-level team meetings. Instructional coaches will be responsible for:
- demonstrating and modeling evidence-based strategies to support and improve teaching and learning.
- co-plan standards-based units of study pacing guides, lesson plans, differentiation strategies, intervention supports, and formative assessments.
- observe classroom instruction, student engagement, and student work products to measure impact on student achievement.
- reflective coaching conversations and conferencing to support individual teachers as they strive to enhance and refine their practices to impact student achievement.
Technology
- Assist teachers in analyzing and strengthening the various ways technology is being implemented to support both instruction and learning.
Communication
- Coordinate professional development and coaching schedules with partners to maximize on-site visit including gathering and analyzing professional growth and student achievement data (i.e., demographics, schedules, calendars, etc.) to make data informed decisions.
- Establish and maintain coaching logs for each assigned staff member, complete on-site reports to ensure they are aligned to the priority targets for each school.
- Review professional development or instructional coaching participant evaluation surveys to drive the continuous improvement process.
- Gather, analyze, and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data to inform priority goals, pivots, and collaborate with school leaders and teachers to plan actionable next steps.
- Additional activities identified by the school leaders.
- Develop and refine professional development training materials to prepare for each assigned project.
Candidate Qualifications

Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Curriculum Instruction, Instructional Leadership, or related education field.
Teaching Experience
- At least five years of successful teaching and/or administration experience at the early childhood level, elementary school level, or secondary level.
- Must possess a valid teaching license in one of these areas to be considered for this position.
- In-depth knowledge of curriculum programs and pedagogical approaches that are interactive, engaging, and impact student achievement.
- Proven track record of helping students achieve success, with an emphasis on Title 1, English Language Learners, and Students with Disabilities.
Instructional Coaching Experience
- Course work or training in coaching or teacher leadership.
- Ability to design and deliver quality job-embedded professional development for administrators and teachers.
- Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills.
- Must know and understand data-driven instruction, and support educators with analyzing student assessment data, and assist teachers with designing lessons based on the instructional needs of students.
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of content standards and experience in research-based instructional practices.
- Experience in design, structure, preparation, and presentation of impactful professional development content.
- Experience implementing technology-enhanced instruction.
- Demonstrated interest and engagement in professional learning and reflection.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, organized, reliable and punctual.
- Working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and virtual meeting programs (Zoom, etc.) preferred.
- Willingness to be flexible and adaptable to the needs of the assigned client and maintain scheduled projects on an as-needed basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification
- Reading Teacher; or
- Reading Specialist Endorsement
- Structured Literacy such as LETRS, Orton Gillingham, Wilson Reading or other structured approaches to literacy instruction.
Instructional Coaching Experience
- Two or more years’ experience facilitating professional development, and engaging teachers and administrators in the coaching cycle within a school setting or supporting schools to improve student achievement.
- Experience in strengths-based and student-centered coaching to lead and support teachers with addressing the instructional needs of all students to accelerate and close achievement gaps.

Travel
- Overnight and out-of-state travel is required for this position. The amount of travel is directly related to meeting territory priority goals and will vary. Due to COVID-19 conditions, some districts and schools are using virtual professional development solutions, and this work is done at home with the expectation that more work will be done in districts and schools.
- The typical Center for Student Achievement Consultant content expert consultant with a multi-state territory will travel at least 50% of the time.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be physically able to drive and travel.
Work Environment
- This is a field position that requires a home office based in the physical territory.
